Italo Disco Friday: Lindstrøm

Everywhere i read about the resurgence of italo or space disco i hear Lindstrøm’s name. So i thought i would check out his highly acclaimed first solo album Where You Go I Go Too, which consists of 3 songs of the following lengths: 29 mins, 10 mins, and 16 mins. While that might sound a bit pretentious…with the slow ebb and flow of the songs it almost seems essential in hindsight. This aint’ your father’s disco, that’s for sure. Here is a stream of the album closer “The Long Way Home”. Buy the album here.

Have a great weekend!

Aspen Woods “All Roads Lead Here”

A pretty tune from Aspen Woods off of their debut LP, New World Disorder, which came out the first of this year, but I’m just jumping on the train now.  A shoegazy/psychedelic band from Bristol England, Aspen Woods recorded the majority of the album live to give the sound a genuine feel to it.  But it seems like one of their best features are their freaked-out psychedelic live shows which you can get a taste of in the videos below.  A lot of reviewers are comparing them to JAMC but that might be too obvious of a comparison (just because they classify themselves as shoegaze) to me it sounds like a louder or looser Doves, at least with this song. Other songs are way more complex than any older JAMC three chord song (they are like the ramones of shoegaze). Vocally it reminds me a bit of Clinic. Ok, i’ll stop annoying you with more comparisons:

Review: Jenny Lewis - Sixth and I Synagogue Washington, DC

Drew Fontaine is a friend of QLP who enjoys pilsner, Menomena, and long walks in the rain.

Jenny Lewis brought a heady mix of the sacred and the secular to D.C.’s beautiful Sixth and I Synagogue last night.

The lead singer of L.A.-based indie poppers Rilo Kiley first surprised fans in 2006 with solo effort Rabbit Fur Coat, which sounded more than a little bit country and little bit rock ‘n’ roll. Lewis has continued in that vein with her brand new release Acid Tongue, which brings gospel and American roots rock flavors to her classic country tunes.

New Radiohead video: “Reckoner”

Radiohead’s commentary on the video via deadairspace:

here is one of my favourite video things that has ever happened
for Reckoner it is, the result of somebody entering a competition to make an animation to one of the tunes on IN RAINbows.

so we asked them whether it was ok to make it the official one we use as it goes with the song so well. they said yes.

yah think?!

Deadbolt: Top 16 80’s Rappers

The Deadbolt just put up their list of the top 16 rappers of the 80’s, which is very apropos considering just yesterday i downloaded Afrika Bambaataa’s (their #5 rapper) Planet Rock. Which is a compilation of all of his singles, with the self-titled single, which used Kraftwerk samples as it’s main beat, being one of the most influential hip-hop songs of it’s time.

As The Deadbolt says:

He was so influential to the early hip-hop scene on a global cultural level that a lot of rap fans probably don’t even know he was instrumental in introducing rap to the world … Bambaataa’s early groups were filled with a variety of innovative sounds and styles that were far ahead of the ’80s rap era. While early NYC rappers were trying to find their sound, Bambaataa was experimenting with the electric European sounds of Kraftwerk to create Electro Funk.

He has some very similar sounds as the space/italo disco i have recently been listening to a lot of, only with an MC over top of it. Check it out.

Africa Bambaataa - Planet Rock (MP3)

I highly recommend buying the whole album, as it has some even crazier stuff than this song.
